How Much Space Do You Need for a Pilates Reformer?

Share

A pilates reformer is about 2.5 metres long and 60–70 cm wide, and it works best with roughly 50 cm of clear floor around it. Pilates reformer size planning breaks into two parts: the room it lives in, and the route it takes to get there. This guide covers both — machine dimensions, clearance, door access, stair and lift checks, and a five-minute measurement routine.

How much space do you need for a pilates reformer?

Allow at least 3 m long by 1.5 m wide of clear floor. In practice, leave about 50 cm of clear floor around the machine on every open side — enough to mount and dismount, and to use the standing platform without a wall in the way.

The pulley end can sit against a wall; the footbar end needs room to work. Long-box exercises extend your arms well above your head, and standing work needs clear headroom above the machine — what that means will depend on your ceiling.

If the tape measure comes up short, see the rooms section below: a few arrangements let a 2.5 m machine fit a room that feels too small for one.

How big is each Milaron reformer?

Every Milaron reformer arrives almost fully assembled. The delivery box goes through the door in one piece; the last steps — shoulder pads, ropes, a few screws — take about 20 minutes.

Model Machine (approx.) Delivery box Frame
Pearl Studio 244 L × 63 W × 35 H cm 249 × 68 × 44 cm 6063-T5 aluminium
Maple Studio 256 L × 68 W × 40 H cm 256 × 73 × 45 cm AAA-grade solid maple
Pearl Foldable 245 L × 68 W × 30 H cm open; 125 H × 68 W × 45 D cm folded 142 × 70 × 65 cm 6063-T5 aluminium

Machine dimensions are approximate. The live product pages carry the detailed spec tables. Delivery box sizes are from the logistics manual; they are the sizes used for access planning.

How much room do you need around it?

Leave about 50 cm on every open side. That covers mounting and dismounting on either side, the step-off move from the standing platform, and the long-box exercises that extend your arms towards the pulley.

The dimension that surprises most people is length. A 244–256 cm machine plus 30 cm at each end puts you close to 3.2 m of floor needed end-to-end. Measure before you plan — the reformer can feel larger on the floor than it does on a screen.

Standing work needs clear headroom directly above the machine. That varies by exercise and by how tall you are; the point is to check it, not to assume.

Will it fit through your door?

The delivery box clears a standard Australian internal door with room to spare. The most common internal door width in Australia is 820 mm. The Pearl delivery boxes are 68–70 cm wide, which clears that easily.

Measure the clear opening — the space between the door stops with the door open, not the frame width — before you plan any route.

The dimension that actually blocks access is almost never the doorway; it's almost always the length of the box negotiating a turn. The Pearl Studio box is 249 cm long. Getting 2.5 m around a stair landing or through a hallway corner needs room on the diagonal: measure that diagonal at any corner or stair turn.

The Pearl Foldable box is 142 cm long, which is why it handles tight stair turns and apartment access more easily than the studio models.

Many apartment lifts are shallow — measure the internal depth of yours before you order if the reformer is going above the ground floor.

If the box can't make a turn, the machine comes out of the crate and goes in assembled. What can't be worked around is when the assembled machine — at 244–256 cm — can't clear a stair turn itself. That's the question worth checking early.

How do you measure your space in five minutes?

You need a tape measure.

  1. Measure the clear opening of every door on the delivery route with the door open. Note the narrowest.
  2. Measure the narrowest point of any hallway, including skirting boards or radiators.
  3. At any stair landing or hallway corner, measure the diagonal — corner to the opposite wall. This is the number that decides whether a long box can pivot.
  4. If there is a lift, measure its internal depth and door width.
  5. In the room itself, tape out the machine footprint — roughly 3.2 m × 1.6 m including clearance for the studio models — and walk around it.

If the narrowest point on the route is under 75 cm, contact us before ordering and we'll confirm which model works or arrange to unbox on arrival.

Which rooms work best?

Spare room. A dedicated space is the most straightforward arrangement: pick a wall for the pulley end, measure the clearance, and that's it. A 3 × 3 m room gives you the footprint and just enough to move freely on both sides.

Open-plan living area. A studio reformer sits well in an open-plan space against a wall or behind a sofa. The machines are designed as furniture — the Maple Studio's solid timber and the Pearl Studio's aluminium profile are meant to be visible.

Garage or home gym. Ceiling height is usually generous here, and the concrete or tile floor suits rubber flooring under the machine. Natural light matters for long sessions; plan for it if you can.

Apartment or a room that does more than one job. The Pearl Foldable is the practical answer here. It opens to the same size as the studio models, so there's no compromise in the session. When the session is over, it folds upright and stores against a wall — 125 cm tall, 45 cm deep, 68 cm wide. "Folds flat to store under a bed or in a cupboard." The 142 cm delivery box also means it navigates most apartment routes without incident.

FAQ

What is the minimum room size for a pilates reformer? Allow at least 3 m × 1.5 m of clear floor, plus 50 cm of working clearance around the machine. That puts the practical minimum closer to 3.2 m × 1.6 m for a studio model.

Will a pilates reformer fit through a standard Australian door? Yes. The standard internal door in Australia is 820 mm wide, and the Pearl delivery boxes (68–70 cm wide) clear it with room to spare. Check stair turns and lift depth rather than the doorway.

How long is a pilates reformer? The Pearl Studio is approximately 244 cm, the Maple Studio approximately 256 cm, and the Pearl Foldable approximately 245 cm open. When folded, the Foldable stands 125 cm tall and 45 cm deep.

Can a pilates reformer fit in an apartment? It can, with planning. The Pearl Foldable's 142 cm delivery box fits in most passenger lifts and clears most stair turns. In the room, it folds to 125 cm tall × 45 cm deep when not in use.
